Qasr Al Hosn

Abu Dhabi City, Abu Dhabi Β· Rating: β˜… 4.7

Our Review

Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest and most significant building in Abu Dhabi, standing as a monument to the origins of the city and the Al Nahyan ruling family. Originally constructed as a watchtower in the 1760s to guard the island's only freshwater well, the structure was expanded into a small fort and eventually became the seat of government and the ruling family's residence.

Following a meticulous restoration completed in 2018, Qasr Al Hosn has been transformed into a museum and cultural center that traces the story of Abu Dhabi from its earliest settlement by the Bani Yas tribe to its transformation into a 21st-century global capital. The exhibitions combine original artifacts, oral histories, and multimedia installations to create an immersive narrative experience.

The complex includes the Inner Fort (the original 18th-century watchtower and palace), the Outer Palace (the mid-20th century expansion), and the surrounding Cultural Foundation, which hosts rotating exhibitions, workshops, and cultural programs. The House of Artisans next door celebrates traditional Emirati crafts including weaving, embroidery, and palm frond braiding.

What makes Qasr Al Hosn particularly compelling is the contrast it offers with the surrounding modern Abu Dhabi skyline. Standing in the fort's restored courtyard, you are literally in the birthplace of the city, surrounded by buildings that existed before the skyscrapers, shopping malls, and highways that now define the urban landscape. It provides essential context for understanding just how rapidly Abu Dhabi has evolved within living memory.
